Homosexuality and Genetics

by studentteacher83 @ Saturday, 12. May, 2007 - 08:43:00

It's worrying how ignorant my year tens are. Yesterday one of them came out with an absolute classic: 'Sir, you know if you're gay or a lesbian, it's because you've got an extra gene that makes you gay.' There I was thinking that an extra chromosome was the cause of Down's Syndrome - I always get that confused with homosexuality.

And it's no use trying to put them right because apparently their sister got told it at university (the University of Homophobia?) and of course they're cleverer than I am, what with my being a teacher and therefore a simpleton.

I despair.

Replace 'a bit' with 'completely' and you'll be about right!

Actually, it is quite a commonly held theory at the moment that homosexuality IS genetic. It hasn't been conclusively proved and not all scientists agree (of course) but there is some evidence for there being a genetic mutation (hence why it is not passed down genetically) and it is still being investigated. It was first announced around 5 years ago and last year there was a little more progress, but it hasn't been a major story as, like I say, it is still in the investigation stages. I happen to know all this due to having a surprising anount of gay people in my family and one of them being very into gay rights etc. Plus I read science journals (ssshhhhhh)!

Perhaps your students aren't quite so ignorant after all!

Haha I wouldn't say that :) It's not common knowledge - I'm quite impressed a mere child would have heard about it though!

it's not so much a theory as a popular idea, it's basically to get people away from the idea that homosexuality is a choice - if it's not a choice then it must be genetic right? yet there is no scientific proof that it is genetic - in fact most evidence points to it being a choice, concious or otherwise... it is very fustrating when something that has no scientific grounding is taken as fact though, you're not stupid, you've just kept your head on.
