My pencil's not sharp, dear si-ir, dear si-ir, my pencil's not sharp, dear si-ir, not sharp.

Well sharpen it dear Liza, dear Liza, dear Liza, well sharpen it dear Liza, dear Liza, sharpen it.

With what shall I sharpen it, dear si-ir, dear si-ir, with what shall I sharpen it, dear si-ir, with what?

A sharpener dear Liza, dear Liza, dear Liza, a sharpener, dear Liza, dear Liza, a sharpener.

Where are the sharpeners, dear si-ir, dear si-ir, where are the sharpeners, dear si-ir, wh-ere?

On my desk dear Liza, dear Liza, dear Liza, on my desk, dear Liza, dear Liza, my desk.

The sharpener's not sharp, dear si-ir, dear si-ir, the sharpener's not sharp, dear si-ir, not sharp.

Blame helix, dear Liza, dear Liza, dear Liza, blame helix, dear Liza, dear Liza, blame helix.

How shall I blame them, dear si-ir, dear si-ir, how shall I blame them, dear si-ir, ho-ow?

Write a letter, dear Liza, dear Liza, dear Liza, write a letter, dear Liza, dear Liza, a letter.

With what shall i write it, dear si-ir, dear si-ir, with what shall i write it, dear si-ir, with what?

Your pencil, dear Liza, dear Liza, dear Liza, your pencil, dear Liza, dear Liza, your pencil.

But my pencil's not sharp, dear si-ir, dear si-ir, my pencil's not sharp, dear si-ir, not sharp.

A typical, daily, conversation in my class!!!!

It's based on an actual conversation with a year nine. I tried singing them 'there's a hole in my bucket' to explain to them but they just looked at me like I was mad.

Are you old enough to know 'there's a hole in my bucket'? Clearly you are!

Just about. I must be quite old-fashioned.

I came across your blog by accident and just wanted to say how refreshing it is to hear I'm not the only one going crazy in this profession! :)

I guess in hindsight that entry does look like the ramblings of a mad man. Should I be worried that I keep finding myself actually singing it?

Not until you start adding a dance to go along... Then I'd be concerned.

Looked up this one quite by accident. Am so relieved seeing this - this goes on forever in my class (last year, around this time, I let them use pens, just a week before the school closed for the summer!)

These are year 9s we're talking about! They don't bring pens, or rulers, or books to school. Even the pencil was lent.

yeah, I too teach the same bunch, (3/4 grade over here) Only, the kids get their own pencil-boxes. I just took spl permission and let them use pens in the last week of the academic year. (lots of ink pots broken, refills thrown all over, broken pens, blue gel pens (banned) flying in the air and what not! Still, they tried their hand at it during my class (only). And this has become a much looked-forward event for every batch.

Lol. It's brilliant how much pleasure the kids can get out of little things like that.

Haha, I'm in year 10, although I'm usually slightly more prepared than this. Although my maths teacher was (understandably) quite annoyed when I forgot my pencil case for a lesson and asked around the whole class for a pen of some sort...I told her that I'd left it at home because I was doing my homework and really she should be grateful that I was working at home at all, but funnily enough she didn't react so well...
I'm never quite sure whether I'm more amazed at the fact that whenever I forget something I get the sudden urge to tell the teacher exactly where the object is in my house, or that the teacher 'doesn't care whether it's on the kitchen table or not, it's not in my lesson and that's what matters!'

Don't think I'd have been too impressed if you'd said that to me, though I would have at least been able to see the humour in it. We can be an uncaring lot sometimes, us teachers, I think I may have used that exact phrase before myself!
