What did I do to deserve that?

by studentteacher83 @ Saturday, 20. Sep, 2008 - 09:20:10

In order for the timetables to work I teach a year nine class once every two weeks. My first meeting with them came on Thursday and it didn't go well.

Firstly it was extremely hard work to get them sat in their correct places. I had a seating plan their regular teacher uses and wanted them to stick to it. They did not do this well, lied about their names and were generally useless. Whilst using every trick in the classroom management handbook to get one boy to sit in his correct place another boy decided to start banging his hands on the table. This spread like wildfire around the room.

In these kind of situations you can either plough on on your own or get back up. It's always preferable if you can sort things out for yourself but it's better to get help before anyone dies. I metaphorically kicked the percussionist into the corridor and got a more experienced member of the department to help me out. She glowered and nagged at them. She'd taught some of them before so was able to shame them into submission.

Thankfully this had the desired effect and we were able to get on with the lesson, even meeting our learning objectives. It was a stressful experience though and I was actually sweating.

When lesson go wrong you sometimes wonder to yourself if you could have done things better. Did you deal with certain situations in the correct manner? Was the lesson actually good enough to stop the pupils from straying off-task? Was I in a bad mood for some reason? I try to be sympathetic and respectful towards my pupils because there are times when they find it genuinely difficult to behave and it's not their fault.

Sometimes though they're just being little shits.

I'm gonna make my 13 year old read this. He has no idea how much stress all that mucking about can cause. xx

Thankfully that kind of thing's a rarity, at least at my school anyway. The worst part about that lesson was that I think they knew exactly how much stress they could cause and were really trying to drive me mad. Luckily I was able to stay calm - or at least not show how hacked off I was.

Certainly with some of those pupils it was!

I'm not sure teenagers are degenerate by default.

I don't know if it's entirely helpful as adults to always find excuses for slack behaviour. Many young people cope admirably with hormones and don't give in to peer pressure. Maybe we should consider them the norm and anyone else degenerate by choice. The kind of behaviour talked about here (and everywhere) wasn't prevalent at my school, but discipline was rigid and harsh. I'm not sure how we got to the position we're in now. I mean, who decided that kids would be better served without discipline?

I'm guessing you had very happy teenage years then.

Sounds like my year 9s. Herding cats seems a less daunting prospect.

I guess that even if you have a perfect lesson plan, etc you can't account for the kids' moods or whether they've drunk cola at break, just come from a PE lesson, etc.

There's so many variables to take into account in a lesson that you can never quite tell how it's going to go. That was probably the worst behaviour I've come across so far, including when I got called a wanker and when a girl set her bag on fire!

Seriously, a girl set her bag on fire?!

Well, at least it's never dull!

Hi! I'm an Uruguayan EFL teacher finding new ways to encourage students to write. To do so, we have created two blogs where they are starting to post; however,I think they would feel more motivated if they knew people from around the world visit them and read what they have to say.
Could you help me? Please, visit their blogs and leave a comment. I'll appreciate it.
Thanks!

All though I have no experience in teaching large groups (1-2 at most), all I could say is to really lose your rag. Excersise a bit of anger, make your own completely new seating plan by lining them up outside the room and individually assign them a spot. Use a bit of anger to invoke a bit of respect out of them, threaten them with a nasty detention, shout a bit. Worked with my class (which was full of...well not the most intelligent lot) when we had a student teacher teaching English.
You wont get anything out of them if you allow them to walk over you. Let your power over them be known and as long as you don't go over the line, all should turn out well.

I think I subscribe to your ideology. There's certainly a correlation between the current poor state of the human condition and the fact that in the last few decades we've become overly-liberal in the way we deal with young people.

It's not normally as bad as that. That was about as frustrating as it gets (thank God!)

Dear studentteacher,

I haven't read your blog in a while, having completely forgotten about it over the summer. I came back tonight after my first 3 weeks of teaching (our kids started on the 3rd) and I have to say you've cheered me up so much! I've been loving it, but the honeymoon is starting to wear off a little - and much as I know everyone else feels the same way it's soooo good to not feel quite so alone (and to be cheered up by your amusing stories). Keep it up :)

Boo

You should not be asking yourself what you did to deserve this!

(The answer is obvious... you became a teacher, aka figure of authority for 13 and 14 year olds who really, really don't want any authority...!!)
